Are new insoles supposed to hurt at first?

I bought insoles just as a temporary aid to my aching feet. I tried them out at work one day and my feet hurt more than ever. Were they just adjusting to the normally otherwise absent arch support? Should I keep wearing them for longer to see if there’s any improvement or just chuck ‘em?
